Who doesn’t chuckle when viewing Target’s Christmas Champ, comedian Maria Bamford, putting her own particularly zany spin of getting ready for the holidays!  There’s also an interesting twist this year:  the @ChristmasChamp Twitter address has been added to her TV spots.  Twitter has indeed arrived; it’s going mainstream!  Twitter is popping up everywhere and Target is leading Twitter’s next wave, integration with traditional media.  Hooray!  I must be channeling my inner Christmas Champ.

Before we pay Christmas Champ a visit, let’s get acquainted with rising star Twitter’s backstory.  Gone are the days of ‘twitter’ signifying inconsequential bursts; here to stay… direct engagement with the fans and the opportunity to sell, sell, sell.  Sure regifting last year’s TV ads is still the rage, but tweeting digital content and conversing with fans is what’s red hot.

  1. Excellent post — and really well written. I know, it’s hard not to love the Christmas Champ and her frenetic movements to be in “shopping-shape.” It is so interesting to see new media (Twitter, etc.) working hand-in-hand with old media (television, etc.). The melding of all media channels make perfect sense as marketers attempt to connect with more consumers/businesses via their preferred channel of communication.

  2. Personal branding is awesome! I am a fan, but I’m not sure if I’m willing to put myself up for that kind of attention. As a PR student, I’ve spent a lot of time learning about branding, but your post leaves me pondering about personal branding in the PR profession… I read a blog recently about how PR professionals have to constantly fight the “shady” persona. PR practitioners are always behind the scenes… Personal branding, putting a face to the profession may ease up some of the “shadiness” in the practice… It could help the client and the PR rep… It’s an interesting thought to make agencies even more personal. In any instance, personal branding and putting a face to customer service (from Target’s standpoint), is obviously successful.
